Gairbraid Avenue
Rankinfraser won this project in an invited competition in 2010. The brief for the competition emphasized the primacy of an outstanding public realm incorporating artwork to complement the refurbishment of Maryhill Burgh Halls and Leisure Centre. Our proposal combined considered restoration and refurbishment of the public realm with contemporary interventions. A careful understanding of the original street layout led to proposals to restore the original Burgh Halls gardens. The redundant and dilapidated Victorian toilet block was to be refurbished and transformed via an innovative public art project. However, due to budgetary constraints, this element was not built. The streetscape was reorganized with the removal of parking in front of the Listed buildings and the creation of a more accessible pedestrian realm in front of the Burgh Halls.
