Bowling Harbour & The Bowline
Rankinfraser were commissioned by Scottish Canals in 2014 to engage in the development of several projects focused around the Bowling Basin, located at the west end of the Forth and Clyde Canal.
The first phase of works relates to the railway viaduct arches as they become converted to retail units. The landscape works involve the creation of a new frontage to the arches, as well as the creation of two viewpoints overlooking the Clyde.
Further phases include the creation of a ‘gateway’ space to the wider site, a masterplan including residential housing, and the creation of a new linear park and cycle route above the historic viaduct.
Design work for next phase in the regeneration of the Bowling Basin is now complete. Proposals for the Viaduct and Bridges above the harbour are now open to the public. Scottish Canals, in partnership with Sustrans and West Dunbartonshire Council, commissioned rankinfraser to develop proposals for a new cycle path and linear park along the historic structure. The proposals seek to retain and reveal the site’s heritage whilst reinterpreting the structures for a new use, further boosting Bowling’s appeal as a destination. The proposals include the insertion of various new steel and iron interventions along the route, complementing the existing steel structures, and forming access paths, viewpoints and interpretative signage elements.
