Water Row
Rankinfraser, in collaboration with Collective Architecture, have developed a masterplan for the Water Row area along Govan Wharf, stretching from Napier Road to Govan Old, and incorporating the new Govan Footbridge landing. The masterplan was commissioned by Govan Housing Association, in partnership with Glasgow City Council, as part of the Central Govan Action Plan.
Phase 1 of the masterplan, which includes 92 affordable housing units and 6 ground-floor commercial units, has now been completed. The landscape design features both residential areas and a significant new public realm space, connecting the development to the Clyde River walkway and the new bridge landing (designed by others).
The public realm design seeks to enhance the quality of the Govan area, using a material palette and tree species that reflect the character of Water Row. This approach creates a cohesive design that integrates seamlessly with the wider context.
The development is framed by a colonnade on three sides, which separates the public realm from the more private residential spaces. These spaces include communal areas for play, growing, and socialising, as well as three tranquil pocket gardens that provide a space for retreat.
