Forest Pitch, Bowhill, Selkirk

Rankinfraser were commissioned by PACE (Public Art Commissioning and Events) to provide technical and design services in support of the artistic concept for Forest Pitch. Forest Pitch was conceived by Artist Craig Coulthard and was part of the Cultural Olympiad, the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic movement. It was part of ‘Artists taking the Lead’, a series of 12 public art commissions across the country, funded by the UK’s Art Councils to celebrate the London Games of 2012. A unique football pitch was created within a commercial forestry plantation on the Buccleuch Estate near Selkirk where on the 25th of August 2012, two football matches were played by recent immigrants to Scotland in celebration of Scotland’s cultural diversity. Rankinfraser also provided design advice for the legacy project which will eventually see the pitch markings transformed into a native woodland ‘ghost pitch’ to be enjoyed by the community for decades to come.
